Tray Truths: 5 Things You Should Know Before Getting Invisalign

Typically, conversations about Invisalign center around one thing: how invisible the trays are, especially when compared to traditional braces. While that’s certainly something you should keep in mind when deciding which teeth-straightening service is right for you, it’s not the only thing you should consider. With this in mind, read on to learn five details you should know before getting Invisalign.

1. Any Soreness You Feel Will Be Temporary

When you first get your aligners, you can expect to feel some soreness. This is actually good news (because it means your teeth are moving!), but it may not feel that way in the moment. Don’t worry – it’s only temporary. Plus, there are a few things you can do to alleviate your discomfort, like sipping on cool water and taking OTC pain medication as directed.

2. It’s a Commitment

Although Invisalign doesn’t require you to change your diet, it does come with a certain level of responsibility. In addition to wearing your trays for 20+ hours a day, you need to clean them each morning and evening and switch to the next set in the series on the correct days. Otherwise, there’s a good chance that you’ll fall off-track with your treatment plan!

3. You May Need to Cut Back on Coffee

Do you usually drink two, three, or four cups of coffee throughout the day? Well, that might change with Invisalign. Remember, you can only drink water with your aligners in, and you only have a few hours of aligner-free time each day. So, stick to only enjoying this caffeinated beverage alongside your breakfast or lunch – it’s a small thing that will help you stay on-track.

4. Your Teeth-Straightening Journey May Include Attachments

The aligners often steal the spotlight, but there are other orthodontic accessories that are sometimes necessary, like attachments. These are particularly useful in more complex cases because they give the aligner something to grip onto. If they are a part of your treatment plan, then use caution when eating crunchy foods, like apples and cashews, to reduce the risk of them falling off.

5. There Are Progress Visits Every 6-8 Weeks

If you have a busy semester ahead, you are a new parent, or you have a big project coming up at work, you may not have time for monthly adjustment appointments. Fortunately, Invisalign is a bit different; the progress visits are every 6-8 weeks instead. Plus, if you are on-track with your treatment plan, you’ll probably be in and out of the office in 20 minutes or less.
